Now when the news came that an expedition would be sent into the area to free the slaves and punish the villains there was one man in Yimpang who insisted that there should be no battle but instead peaceful relations with the government. This man called Mache was looking after the Saochu slave, a little boy (see p. 180), but on Chingmak's advice he secretly brought the boy to Mokokchung which so embittered Yimpang that they burnt down Mache's house and appropriated his fields. Mache could no longer live in his village and he and his wife fled to Mokokchung. (221) Now he had accompanied us and is most useful as he knows Pangsha and its plans for war. |
