We started off in beautiful weather around seven o'clock. Smith and I as well as the dobashis and a part of the servants were all armed to the teeth. The order of marching was as follows. First came six Chingmei warriors as lookouts who had in particular the duty to discover traps and panjis and disarm them. (230) They were wearing white bandages around heads and chests so that they would not be confused with the enemy in the case of a battle. They are followed by a strong advance troop of sepoys, then come Williams and Mills with several dobashis at the top of the main troop. At its end walk Smith and myself and after us come dobashis, the servants and finally the coolies with sepoys sprinkled in here and there. The rearguard concludes the still rather long train. |
