At least fifteen minutes have past since we reached the camp. If the Pangsha men had actually met the three on their own all help would be too late. It would take at least half an hour to walk up the steep slope to the village. On top of it the bushes at the shore are burning because we lit them when the last coolies had arrived (249) in order to do maximum damage to Pangsha. We all are certain that Nlamo and his companions' heads are already in Pangsha's hands and we stand around helpless are more or less pale. No one understands what those unfortunate ones were doing so long in the village. Anxious minutes pass when suddenly we see people coming down the path. They run through the burning grass. Fortunately the well trodden path provides a relatively wide passage through it, and they turn out to be the lost ones. |
