In the morning we decide on the following strategy. All the coolies apart from four, as well as the servants and a part of the dobashis under the protection of half of the sepoys shall walk downstream along the river for a way, then take the direct path to Noklak which soon branches off to the right. They should make themselves as conspicuous as possible and set fire to the jungle on the way. We want to make the Pangsha people believe that all of us are pulling back. (253) In the meantime we try to reach the small Pangsha under cover with about fifty sepoys, some dobashis, the Chingmei men and four coolies, in order to surprise the inhabitants and maybe get a head which is the strongest desire of all coolies. |
