text: Although it had been bitterly cold for the last few days and we had been freezing by day and especially by night in this, on all sides open camp at Chingmei, (12) I feel almost sadness at leaving this place which I will hardly ever see again as it had been almost like coming home after our return from Pangsha. As we leave today there still is hoar frost on the grass, the first I have seen here, but already as we pass the village the sun has reached us and it fills us with pleasant warmth. The inhabitants of Chingmei who have by now lost their reserve, sit in close rows, all seats have been taken from where they can get a good view of our caravan. Obviously our passage is as big an event here as a coronation or a royal funeral would be in London.
