The summit of the mountain ridge which is hardly less than 7000 feet high is covered with dense forest to a large part consisting of the prickly and very thin bamboo with tall leafy trees in between. Hardly a ray of sunshine enters the dusk of the forest and the soil is dark brown and light. Its fertility can not be used however as no produce of the fields grows at this height. (45) As soon as we have crossed the summit the path leads down moderately steep and following a ridge which stands at a right angle to the main ridge. For a long time we walk through the cool forest. When it clears we see ourselves on a crest which is parallel to the ridge which has Tuensang at its end. We climb over a small rocky height with a wonderful view then down so steeply that I am puzzled how our people could have brought down the mithans over parts where we even have to use our hands to steady ourselves. Finally through fields of job's tears and sweet potatoes we reach a valley with a stream running through it which we cross on one of those swinging bamboo bridges with a slight upwards curve, |
