elder trees especially useful in over-used jhum land |
text: |
For a long while the trail leads through jhumed land where some people are just occupied with clearing of the jungle. They cut off the elder trees, which dominate on these slopes, about half a metre above the ground and strangely enough these stumps sent out new shoots after the burning of the underbrush and the dry branches. Only a few trees have such a resilience and therefore these elder trees are a real blessing for the soil here which is exhausted from the too frequent clearing. It is said that they are imported from the region around Tobu. |
