tattoos, monkey nets and houses |
text: |
Noksan is a large village and the houses stand in two long rows on the ridge of a mountain slope with tall platforms over the precipice. In many houses we saw large nets which are used for catching monkeys in the fields. In the village the Chang and Ao are not distinguishable by their dress but one can recognise the women from their facial tattoos. Noksan is at peace with most of its neighbours. Only occasionally an excursion is led towards Yacham but mostly with the result that one or two of the Noksan heroes leave their heads in Yacham while the attacked ones get out of the affair without any loss. When Mills once was in Yacham the people begged him not to interfere with Noksan's war excursions as this was Yacham came to get heads without any efforts. A Saochu man came into our camp and declared himself to be the father of one of the slave boys who we had sent on to Mokokchung and asked to be allowed to take him back. He will fetch him from Mokokchung. |
