(60) Camp at the Dikhu 12/12/1936 |

Today we had the first really easy march in a long time. First we came through the village of Litim where the Ao aspects already far dominate. In some of the genna posts the development from the double hornbill bird tail was especially apparent. Then our walk descended steeply into the Dikhu valley. On the slopes stood some trees making long shadows over the naked burnt down fields. Jhum land was on both sides of the path which went along the top of a mountain shoulder. On the left the old fields of this year already covered with green and now left to lie fallow for a long time, on the right the present new fields which are planted once again as 'old fields'. Stubble and weeds had been burnt down recently on them and only a few fields with sweet potatoes, aubergines and chillis interrupt the black-brown of the soil and the traces of fire. The final stretch leads through jungle and soon we reach our camp underneath the tall trees at the banks of the Dikhu |
