division of spoils of punitive expedition |

(61) We had received almost fifty daos as salaams which now were divided among the dobashis, gaonburas and our boys. The best pieces we had reserved for ourselves of course, and I could add several good types to my collection. But more important than the daos was another part of the spoils. To the sorrow of our coolies we had of course not succeeded in capturing a head in our skirmishes with Pangsha. On the other hand we no doubt have killed some of the enemies. Now an ingenious mind had the idea that the heads which I had robbed from the skull tree of Wenshoyi khel could be used as substitutes for the killed Pangsha men as they were still quite fresh and had only hung on the head tree, not however in a morung, there was hope that not all their magic power had dissipated. |
