climbing in procession of warriors towards Wanching |

Slowly the brave head-hunters caught up with us and soon I was walking at the head of a long procession up the mountain through tall jungle grass. It would have been embarrassing to climb up slowly and to stop and catch one's breath, but due to all the mountain climbing during our tour, my muscles were well trained and my pulse beat regularly and hardly increased. We passed the field hut where once a woman had given me two cucumbers. Then it had stood in a rice field and surrounded by tall maize stalks and in oppresively hot air we had staggered down the mountain sweating profusely. Now a fresh wind blew around the abandoned house sitting there on the empty field. (81) We climbed up innumerable steps some built of stone others held by wooden sticks. |
