through the fields at Tanhai |

The path is now well cleared. Yellow and burning red leaves which as colour spots shine from the green of the forest now are giving the country an autumnal appearance (133) and the white fog banks which fill the valleys rekindle memories of October days in the Alps. A small part of Tanhai's old field has already been cleared of the weeds which quickly shoot up after the harvest and tall trees stand on naked brown soil widely set apart. Wisely enough they had been spared when the jungle was cleared. A Wakching woman and her daughter are going the same way as we do to buy rice in Tanhai. Now already two months after the harvest some families have already used up their own rice and now live mainly off taro. |
