gennas for birth of a child |

On the Thepong path Shankok shows me split bamboos which are leaning against a tree and a few ginger roots and a leaf is tied to each of them. Most of them are already old but some are quite fresh. I have never before noticed these sticks which does not exactly speak well for my gift of observation. Such a bamboo is put up here at the genna for the birth of a child. The entrails of the chicken sacrificed at this genna are wrapped in leaves and are fastened to another tree. (197) For a boy a bamboo is stuck onto the roof of the house, for a girl it is a rattan branch. |
