I then went to Shankok's house where I also found Yongang and another Thepong man. After a short while came another man who was no longer young and looked rather impoverished and soon a vigorous debate ensued. The new arrival was Dukdang, a man of the Nokanokphong clan, and originally from the Angban. Although he has a house in the Angban and a wife and son there, more than six years ago he married a Thepong woman who has to look after her old father and therefore did not want to move into the Angban. Instead she remained in her father, Shouba's house, and Dukdang alternated between both morungs and the two women. Nevertheless he does not seem very wealthy as for the tribute payment Shankok lent him 2 rupees. As Shouba died several months ago there is no longer any reason for Dukdang to remain in the Thepong, (23) therefore the Thepong men firmly demanded that he should pull down his house in the Thepong and return to the Angban. After initially fighting ferociously, his two wives now are supposed to get on quite well and have been working on the fields together in harmony for some time. (See notebook 9 p. 121). |
