Around this one now the Ang men gather while all young Ben people and all boys run around it screaming and brandishing their daos. As I was told the purpose of this screaming which in its wildness and spontaneity would have done full honour to a Reinhart chorus, was that the old men's words would not be heard by the young people and women as they are secret words, "Shorom kota", as Yongang says. Nevertheless the Ang later dictates the words to me and they turn out to be a call to Hayang for taro, millet, game and enemy heads. Characteristically rice is not mentioned (compare 10th April p. 40). |
