great variation in language; terms of address |

Today the weather was looking a bit more hopeful in the morning and the morning was relatively sunny. At first however the village was unusually quiet and together with Yongang and the Ang I took the opportunity to take down the Longkhai equivalent to words familiar to me in the language of Wakching. The differences between the two languages are surprising. Even for completely fundamental concepts, the corresponding words show no similarity, while on the other hand a group of words of less importance is the same in both languages. One difference which touches upon the sociological area is that in Longkhai spouses address each other by their names while this is frowned upon in Wakching and spouses do not at all address each other while they have no children, and later call each other father or mother of so and so. |
