women adorning themselves; list of ornaments |
text: |
In the enclosure next to the Ang house the women are once more busy adorning themselves for the dance. Only today do they seem to put on their full finery and the ornaments they have taken out of dusty joppas cover a whole big mat one piece set closely to the next |

In addition to these three necklaces there are six 'collier de chien' of yellow and brown glass beads, cylindrically shaped "spirit money" that is the genuine old stone beads, is not among them but there is one string of these precious yellow stones among one of the large blue necklaces. Very similar to the 'collier de chien' is a head ornament of yellowish brown glass beads which however forms a closed circle and is put over the leaf cap by Ang girls. Three of the head ornaments are lying on the mat. (70) In addition I see 8 heavy bead bracelets and two brass bracelets of the Wakching type with teeth, two pairs of bracelets on a foundation of rattan and with elaborate cowry and blue bead decorations are apparently only worn by Ang women. Of course this list is not complete and furthermore it has to be taken into account that several girls were already richly ornamented when I took notes of the objects on the mat. |
