carvings on morungs and drums |

I am first led to the morung which in style is like the Oting morungs. One very reasonable peculiarity is that the platform next to the morung has a roof. As the side walls are open it now is an especially cool and pleasant place to be. At the main post of the morung there is the carving of a man standing with large ivory earrings and the right hand raised like for the Hitler salute. Furthermore on a cross-beam I notice the relief carving of a crab and of two human figures, one of which is picking the other's lice. The drum and the entire morung are of small dimension. (125) The village of only thirty houses has only this one morung. Originally two had been built but there are not enough men in Lunglam to keep both of them up. The houses are spread out between tall trees and palms. |
