text: On another field I saw a woman digging taro. She did it with a long, very rough stick, and obviously had a good eye for where the tubers might be in the ground. As soon as the tuber had been dug out she bent down and threw it over her shoulder into the carrier basket she had on her back. Even on my way back around half past eleven I still met several people who only now were on their way to the fields, and maybe had already carried home a load of taro. Harvesting the taro seems to be an entirely female activity.
