(184) The morung is so small and low that I do not find a comfortable place to sit down, therefore I go to the house of the gaonbura which also is quite small and hardly distinguishes itself from a small Ao house with a plaited platform in the back of the only room. The madhu I am offered is a thick, brown liquid of unpleasant taste and probably minimal alchoholic content but the people are quite nice and most of them speak Assamese. Trading with the plains seems to be essential to their survival as they do no weaving nor do they make pots or daos. All these goods they either buy from the Ao or in the markets of Assam. The necessary money they get through the sale of pan leaves. |
