relations of Ao and Konyak; teeth blackening |
text: |
I settle down in the morung and the two gaonburas and several other men sit down around me. Anaki is a unique village. It is half Konyak, half Ao. This is the Konyak morung and the houses below are all Konyak. The two gaonburas are much alike, the Ao too has blackened teeth. Typically Ao however is the excellent rice beer which they give me. It prickles like champagne and is deliciously refreshing. Konyak and Ao seem to live in complete harmony. More recently there even are supposed to have been mixed marriages. The children from such marriages speak both languages, but predominantly that of the father. Otherwise as well most people understand the language of the other khel. |
