(202) For example, in Namsang the memory of the fights with the Singpho who invaded Assam is still alive. The people of Namsang say that the Rajahs of Assam found refuge in their village. The Singpho had come from Burma, then pushed ahead along the Dikhu beyond Borjan, but the people of Namsang defeated them above the bend and chased them far into the plains. At the time they captured one of the long Singpho daos which is still being kept in one of the morungs. They chased the Singpho all the way to the confluence of the Dikhu river with the Brahmaputra and there they set a pole as a border marker. After that they received tribute from the entire territory to the Brahmaputra and annually the Rajahs of Assam sent them daos, buffalo, fish and other goods and bought pan leaves from them. |
