buying presents of cloth in the bazaar |
text: |
Today Shankok bought his younger sister a cloth from the plains for the exhorbitant price of 8 Rs. yet it is much less pretty than the Naga cloth. He said his sister had been begging him constantly to go to the Santok bazaar and buy her such a cloth, but he did not want to do this because he feared getting malaria in the plains. To my comment that their Naga cloths are much prettier he responds "Yes, but these cloths from Assam are not available to everyone, only rich people can buy them". So a certain degree of bragging is not alien to the Konyak. To my question whether his sister's husband does not buy her these things, he responds that he does not give her anything, he (Shankok) had to buy everything for his two sisters. |
