It is a beautiful morning. The sun barely gets through the haze which now lies over the land day and night. Only when it has risen higher does it finally get through completely. The brown of the fields framed by green grass and jungle, the shimmering white of some trees covered with blossoms, and the hundred voices of birds, it all gives a springlike atmosphere to the landscape, and with some imagination one can enter into a mood of Easter-time. However the streams are not freed of ice but are running quite dry and some springs, from which in the summer, water had poured out as though from a bamboo pipe, now are completely dried up. On the fields now there already are small maize shoots coming up and tender taro leaves. The latter probably come from the tubers which have stayed in the ground as taro has not been planted on the old fields. |
