After supper we saw the light of flames over the village and already thought that there was a fire in the Balang or Bala. Therefore I quickly went off but I found everyone in the village quite unconcerned and soon discovered that the fire was only in the jungle on the way to Wanching. From the Bala morung I then could actually see an entire slope which had flared up in flames. The fire had been caused by the carelessness of a Bala man and it now destroyed the forest which was to be cleared next year. This is a considerable loss as now they have to wait much longer before the land can be used. Nevertheless, people did not seem much perturbed. The Bala, Balang and Angban men went to fight the flames, but the others stayed in the village. A fine will be demanded from the guilty person (249) but he is so poor that not much will be gained. |
