The gaonburas who had gone off to buy pigs have now come back. Half past nine at night I arrive at Chinyang's house and find the family just getting ready to prepare their evening meal. A big pot of taro is on the fire, the top tied close. Chinyang says they always eat as late as this. For the Oulingbu he has bought a big pig 'ngan', which cost 13 Rs. He gave a cow for it which had cost him only 10 Rs. He said that they much prefer pork over beef and that therefore pigs are more expensive than cattle. Yongang too traded a cow for a pig and he told the people that the cow had cost 20 Rs. In addition Chinyang bought a dancing hat for 2 Rs. for his son and cotton hanks for 1 Rp. for which, as my cook says, an Ao would not have given 6 annas. |
