As the old men had not finished with their preparations for the ceremony (2) I first went to Ahon's house. There I was struck by the large number of pots. They are produced in Shiong itself and in a corner were the lumps of clay from which they are made. This now completely dry clay is ground up with water and then it is worked into shape with the help of a roundish stone and a wooden beater. At first it is fired slightly in the house and then is carried into the jungle where the pots are fired for several hours on a large pyre until they are glowing red. |
