In the afternoon I continued taking down the residents list of the Angban. It turned out that by far the largest percentage of the people belongs to the Nokanokpong clan. In house number 13 I found an instance of the not common cross-cousin marriage. A girl had married the son of her mother's older brother. The ceremonial payments between both families must therefore almost be equivalent in value. Yongem, who was with me, was uncertain about the inhabitants of many houses, and again and again he had to ask the names, especially of the women. The younger people easily forget, especially the names of very old people because hardly anyone addresses them by using their name as all those older than they themselves are already dead. |
