After planting the fields are cleared and all the dried up straw, the grass and wood bits, are piled up in small intervals and burnt. Chillies, garlic and ginger are grown in the place where the fire had burnt. (24) In very steep fields long tree trunks are set horizontally across the slope to stop the soil from being washed away. Some earth is put against these beams so that above each trunk there is a narrow level strip. Taro and maize are planted on this strip and rice is grown on the steep parts of the slope.
