In the afternoon we again asked the gaonburas about matters concerning agriculture and land ownership. The borders between fields are marked in a peculiar manner. Stones identify the field corners but in between, along the borderline, they grow a kind of onion ('sheang-shep') which has the characteristic that it is not destroyed by fire and therefore comes up undisturbed after the fields are burnt off. It has red and white blossoms so there have to be two kinds. It is remarkable that the Kacha Naga also use this plant for marking their fields but the Kuki do not. |
