bitter roots eaten in famine |
text: |
I was shown the whitish tubers of a fern on the way back which in time of need are eaten here as well as in Chi, Mon etc. It is prepared like taro but is supposed to taste bitter and unpleasant. Chinyang said that it tastes so bad and gives you such a stomach ache that in Wakching it is not even eaten in times of hunger. We only get home after sunset and not much is happening in the evening. While the Ang is eating and sitting with his main wife in their communal living room, his Ben wives and their children squat around a fire in the large back room. |
