Concerning the relationships between the two sexes there is a difference between Wakching and Oting in so far as Oting has less promiscuity among the unmarried and newly married people. Usually a girl sleeps only with the man she is engaged to and it is not customary to sleep with one man and then when pregnancy occurs to marry someone else. Of course there are exceptions to the rules. The younger Ang daughter will now (60) marry a Ben man of Oting as no Ang son could be found in another village, but she still does not sleep with him. However at the Oulingbu this year she will probably exchange her lead earrings for brass ones and then she can have intercourse with her fiance. It is considered shameful to become pregnant while still very young. Chingai confirmed that the Great Angs of Mon and Chi can take girls from the villages which owe them allegiance even against their will. As far as these villages are now administered however, this is no longer the case and although Oting is a 'son' of Mon the Mon Ang never had this right in Oting. |
