text: I also made closer enquiries about the forest spirit, Yaniulongba, and about the water spirit Niem-niu. Chinyang is convinced that he has heard the former and even seen the latter. (65) (See notebook 12 p. 123). A sacrifice is made to the water spirit before they go fishing. The human soul, yaha, literally shadow, is considered to be invisible and not affected by physical death.
