text: Once Kauffmann had finished measuring we went to the Thepong where Shankok had asked many young men to come. There we recorded two of the Thepong songs on Kauffmann's phonograph. I was surprised how well people understood what was happening and how cleverly they behaved. However we could not reproduce the same solemn rhythm and enthusiasm as for the real dance. When we replayed the cylinder afterwards and the people heard their own singing, though quietly, they could hardly contain their surprise and merriment. The leader covered his face with his hands and shook himself with laughter.
