When the sun is already low I start off on the return journey but Metlou is not to be found. He already had been slightly tipsy when I had last seen him and I suspect that he must be lying down in a friend's house, more or less drunk. (137) As it turned out later this assumption was correct. So now I go off with Yongem. Several times our way is blocked by heavy trees which the storm had brought down. Entire holes have been created in the jungle, but as far as I can see the trees are not uprooted but have all been broken off. The force of the gale must have been terrible here. Yongem shows me the place where the evening before yesterday while bringing my table he had seen a leopard who fortunately had run away from him. Of course one never has this kind of encounter while carrying a gun. |
