I now go home and on the entire long walk through the fields which takes me almost an hour I do not see anyone working in the fields and also meet no one. I only see some people in a hut. (183) In the evening I try to write down a drum rhythm which is very difficult. The Ang, the smith Yanmong, Hamlien and another man play on my drum and I try now to take down their beats, then to play one part myself. There are four parts, three main players and the 'chorus'. The latter in reality consists of about ten players all of them beating the same rhythm. The three solo players are called shem-ling-ba, weng-dzung-ba and khokba. The players of the chorus, wung-ba-lan. The rhythms are very complicated and I hardly ever succeeded in joining in correctly. |
