equality of women and men |
text: |
If the man of the house happens not to be in Wakching and a friend of his from another village comes to visit, the housewife will receive the guest as though her husband were present. She will feed him and let him sleep on the small bed. This is not uncommon as many Wakching men often go for several days to the plains or on other trading excursions. The total equality of women in day to day life also is expressed in the freedom with which they speak and joke with other men in the presence of their husbands. Just now in Yongang's house, his wife who comes from the Bala is talking in no way inhibited with Medzou, who happens to be present. He has just stretched out on Yongang's platform bed which indicates that it is now catagorically prohibited to use someone elses bed. Only at night no one but the owner is supposed to sleep on it but during the day it is used as a common sitting area. |
