The morning was spent rather unproductively with small tasks and several purchases. In the afternoon I went to Yongang's house to measure it. It is a good example of a medium sized Wakching house. It is 19m long including the platform. The part covered by the roof is 16m long, and 5.5m wide. In the large front room with the hearth there are two wide bamboo beds and one which is narrower. The two wide ones which stand at the narrow end of the room belong to Yongang the head of the household and to his wife. No stranger may ever sleep on them even in their absence. Of Yongang's children, Yanang already sleeps in the morung, Weidzing with him on his bed and Liang and Pongte with their mother on her bed. The daughter of Yongang's dead brother who also lives in the household sleeps in the house of a widow together with the girls of her age-group. The smaller bed is for guests and now in the afternoon Yongang's son Yanang, (186) who is about twelve, has stretched out on it. |
