Went to the new fields in the morning hoping to take a few colour photographs but after initial sunshine soon the clouds rose up from the plains and they rolled across the heights of Wakching in the usual way. At first I saw only a few people but Shankok was working on one of his fields near the rest house (207) on the path to Wanching as the only man in a group of women. Liphung's entire age group had come as well as about ten older women. Shankok pays the latter in the form of rice. The girls however receive no pay but take turns working in the fields of all gang members. Two smaller girls who so far have no own gang had come with them and have attached themselves permanently to this gang. This is generally customary. The young men's age group are also usually accompanied by some smaller boys who fetch water and do all sorts of smaller tasks. |
