coolies arrive to carry down goods; opium |
text: |
To carry all my loads coolies from three villages had been requested, from Wakching, Tanhai and Longkhai. They came early in the morning and the gaonburas had a lot of difficulty in distributing equally the thirty loads. It did not pass by without a lot of shouting but finally all loads were divided (218) and the coolies went ahead. The sun was shining as I went for a last time down the hill past the chowkidar's house, went through the two rows of wooden sheds and turned right away from the village and through the forest. Shankok went with me as well as the chowkidar, the Ang and Katwang, the cousin of the Ang of Longkhai. The other gaonburas had stayed behind to buy opium and wanted to follow immediately. |
