It is quite cool today but most of the children are completely naked. The hair of the boys is let grow and only cut a little above the front, so that it doesn't fall into the eyes. Some of them have a necklace, but I don't see any of the valuable kind worn by Wakching boys (spirit money). Most of the boys wear red cane rings under (31) the knee, a stick or a simple ring is stuck through the ear lobes. The older boys, from about ten on, complete their dress by a cane belt. A few wear some simple metal armlets. Now many of the children standing near Ahon's house to have a look at us have wrapped some very dirty, greyish-brownish cloth round their bodies. Neither the boys' or girls' cloths are decorated in any way. They are not dyed either but their present colour is due to the accumulated dirt. |
