The older girls and the married women have long hair which they hold together by a ribbon running over the head (coming up behind the ears). The hair falls over their back. The grown-up girls and women wear as their only dress a ribbon about five inches wide. It is fastened in front at the string worn around the hips, very low, so that it just covers the private parts. Behind it is allowed to slip down a little leaving uncovered the [] in such a way that the woman actually sits on this rudimentary kilt. (33) Sometimes the cloth, which is of exactly the same kind as those worn by the children, is wound around the hips, if a woman is not working she may draw it up so that it covers her breasts and take the longer end over the left shoulder. |
