quarrels and fights between morungs |
text: |
(24) The Bala morung was driven away because the Bala people had become proud. They beat people of Wakching and killed a girl from Wanching (Wanshum of Pan-shong morung). Then the other Wakching morungs decided to drive the Bala people away from Wakching. But as the Wanching Ang was on good terms with the Bala men he did not revenge the death of Wanshum, but gave to some of the Bala men an assylum in Wanching. |

At first they drove away the whole Bala morung, some to Wanching, some to Tamlu and (25) some to Namsang. |

(25) When they departed from Wakching the young men of Bala said "from now on we are your enemies - like the men of Yimbei (Kamahu)" a village which was always at war with Wakching. And when they lived at Wanching the young men often came to Wakching and set fire to the houses. Then after one year Wakching killed one of them who had lived in Wanching. A few Bala men had remained in Wakching. (26) Pongyong had no quarrel with the villagers and the reason why he was dismissed as Ang still remains a little mysterious. While his brother had been Ang of Wakching, Pongyong was in Pungkhung. When his brother died he was called back and made Ang. But apparently his position was not very strong. When he was dismissed as Ang he got one granary and the fields of two rich houses of the Bala morung. The other fields of the Bala people were divided among the other morungs. (27) When the Bala men came back all their property had vanished. They were given only some jungle and they hire fields from other people. |

Now-a-days when a Thephong man died the Bala girls go behind the dead body at the funeral. When the Bala people were exiled no girls followed the coffin at all. |

When the Government persuaded the Wakching people to call back the Bala men, they did it only under the condition that the latter won't (28) demand back their property. |
