Medzou married first Mendzing (Shayanghu, Thepong). He gave the marriage price. After some time she moved to his house, but they had no children. She stayed only one year in his house. Then Shayong, a man of Yinyonghu, Angban, took her away from Medzou and married her. He had to give Medzou more than the latter had originally paid as marriage price. They had a son and a daughter but both died, then Shayong died and Mendzing married Dukdau (Nokanokphong, Angban). (138) Then Medzou married Menyu (of Koknokkhu, Thepong) the daughter of Shankok's father's brother, who was pregnant at that time by Yongna (Metahu, Balang). She gave birth to a girl, Shongnio. Three years ago Shongnio married first Menling (Shayonghu, Thepong). He gave 5 layas, 2 chickens, 2 mounds of white chaul, 2 mounds of red rice, 20 spears, 6 seers of rice, 2 baskets of chillies, 1 basket of betel nuts, 1 seer of "shun", 10 bundles of pan leaves, 30 dried fish. Menling was a mere boy, however, he is now about 15-16. The match was arranged (139) by Medzou and Yonglong, Menling's father, and Shonio didn't approve of their choice. Therefore she didn't sleep with Menling at all, but had an affair with Shouba, a young man of Koknokhu (Aukheang). She married him and went to live in his house one year ago, but they have no children. Only a month ago the whole affair was settled and Shouba refunded to Menling the entire marriage price which the latter had paid. Menling, resp. his father had also asked for a fine of 10 Rupees but he didn't get it. The (140) settlement of the whole dispute took six days and the following men were busy with it intermediating between Menling and Shouba: the gaonburas Chinyang, Medzou, Nie-ang, Shankok and Metlou, Yongang, the Niengba of the Thepong Taidzing. Shouba borrowed part of the price from rich Aukheang men. Soon afterwards Menling married a Bala girl, Wanshung (Dzounok) who had been engaged before to Phunie (Koknokhu, Thepong). He had only given one spear, however, as an advance to the marriage price. (141) Phunie is younger than Wanshung and they did not sleep together. Menling gave to Phunie as compensation two layas. Menling gave to Wanshung's brother, Shangyo, (her father is dead) three layas, one dao, 30 spears. No rice or salt. Wanchung stayed for five or six days in Menling's house and then went back to live in her brother's house. They had no intercourse, however, for Menling is still a bit young. |
