When Shopong, who is a hi, makes a genna for a sick man he goes to his house and first kills a pig on the threshhold of the house. [konyak]. Then the pig is singed and cut up. Shopong then takes small pieces of the feet and "hand" of the pig and pieces of the heart and mixes these with salt, ginger and sticky rice. He receives himself one hind-leg (74) and a part of the stomach. Then he throws bits of the mixture into all the corners of the house and says again: [konyak]. After that Shopong and all the relatives of the sick man eat rice and pork. Shopong receives Rs 1 to 3 for his services. Before he kills the pig he strokes the sick man with "lai-mei" leaves and says: [konyak]. (75) Before the whole ceremony takes place, Shopong is given some rice and takes it to his house. He then scatters it all over his house. After doing this he goes to sleep and in his dreams he is told by Ha-yang whether the sick man will die or whether the ceremony will be of some use. Ha-yang also tells him in what part of the house the pig must be killed. |
