text: Red dye for textiles:
text: The roots of a small tree, "gai", are used for dyeing thread (cotton). They are cut into pieces and boiled in water. After a few hours the pot is taken from the fire and only then the thread is put in. It remains in the dye for two or three days. This is done by women. (3) For blue and black dye indigo leaves (wu-niem) are cut into small pieces and boiled in water. Later on the thread is put in and remains in the dye for two or three days. This is only done by the old and middle aged women, who, however need not be past child bearing age. It is not genna for girls, but they usually are busy in the fields.
