journey through Jaintia country |
text: |
We followed the road to Silchar as far as U. Manlang where I had been on my visit to the potters' village. From there the road runs through rolling hills transversing the Jaintia Hills as far as Jowai. In that town was a hold-up because dozens of lorry drivers had stopped their vehicles and blocked the road because of a quarrel with the police. They said the police had extracted bribes, while the police maintained that a lorry driver had been fined. I was prepared for a long wait, but after a short time the lorries began to move and we could proceed. At Jowai the road forks. One - which we took - leads to Garampani, - and the other leads to the border of Pakistan. |
