As we passed through a rice-field on the slope below the village, I noticed a row of stones. Deusuba explained that they had been put up in the name of Easoing, a wealthy man whose heir had given Rs 100 to the young men and boys of his morung to erect the stones. There was one big stone, representing Easoing and 35 smaller stones standing in a line. The latter were a tally of the women with whom he had had sexual relations. Even a simple act of intercourse with a woman was sufficient qualification for a stone to be put up. |
