In the afternoon we went along the road to Laisong Bagan, a small relatively new village inhabited by 11 Christian and 3 pagan families. A very charming man talked to us and told us how a Government official had helped them to start the growing of oranges, lemons, pine-apple, and jack fruit. (45) Because the soil is good all these fruits thrive and the villages now sell them to policemen and porters of the outposts and make a good profit. They also do jhuming and have much cattle, - a new innovation, for previously Zemis kept no cows but only mithan and buffaloes. They bought cows only some eight years back. Occasionally they are milked, and they serve as food. They are not being kept for sale. |
