In the morning I saw Mr. Doalagupu, and gave him Rs 20/- and a note of apology to the Guilong gaonbura. - At 10 am I left on a jeep accompanied by a Mr. Chetri, - of Nepali descent, - who is E.A.C. at Haflong and had some family business in Shillong. |

On the way I was struck once more by the extraordinary emptiness of the country. Apparently the District Council has a veto on the settlement of outsiders, and hence the area cannot be populated by people from the plains of Assam. The road is used only by 1-3 cars a day. |

We reached Shillong at 7 pm. I was glad to see the Nehrus in good shape. They had crashed near Jowai with a helicopter and their escape was miraculous. They had come from Kohima, and their engine failed just over the paddy lands of Jowai. A similar crash on forest or hard rocks would have been fatal. |
